A 28-year-old Charlotte man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a 37-year-old man at a Garner motel, Johnston County authorities said.

José Francisco Banegas-Quintanilla was taken into custody Friday at a trailer on a Pitt County hog farm after detectives obtained a search warrant, according to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office. He was arrested without incident and returned to Johnston County that night.

Banegas-Quintanilla faces charges of murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and possession of a stolen motor vehicle in the Oct. 11 death of Victor Manuel Martinez-Rivera at the Super 8 Motel on Leone Court in Garner. He is being held without bond at the Johnston County Jail.

Deputies responded to the motel at about 8:50 p.m. and found Martinez-Rivera dead in a second-floor room with gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.

Detectives allege Banegas-Quintanilla drove away in Martinez-Rivera’s vehicle after the shooting. Investigators tracked him from Johnston County to Charlotte and then east to Kinston, where the vehicle was found abandoned in a business parking lot.

The investigation lasted more than two weeks and included reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing people around the state, authorities said. The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office credited assistance from local, county and state agencies, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg police and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell said detectives followed leads across North Carolina before making the arrest. The charges are allegations; the case will proceed through the court system.
