Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are asking for the public’s help identifying a driver who fled after striking and fatally injuring 6-year-old Mariana Espinoza in east Charlotte.
The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at Barrington Drive and Lanecrest Drive. Police said Espinoza was crossing the intersection when she was hit. She died at a hospital on Saturday, Oct. 24.
On Monday, police released a photo of a vehicle they are seeking: a gray 2012-2015 Mercedes-Benz C250 with a sunroof and significant damage to its front grille. Investigators said it also had black rims, a matte-black gas-cap cover and a temporary tag.
No arrests had been announced as of Monday. Police asked anyone with information to call 911 immediately.
Espinoza attended Devonshire Elementary School. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools said her death would be deeply felt by the school community and that it was working with school leaders to support students, families and staff.
