A damaged natural gas line prompted emergency crews to close the intersection of South Tryon and West Bland streets in Charlotte’s South End on Saturday, Oct. 24, after nearby residents reported smelling gas and called 911 in the afternoon, authorities said.
Piedmont Natural Gas was working to repair the line. The Charlotte Fire Department had not provided an estimate for how long the work would take.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the streets would remain closed while crews worked and urged people to avoid the area. Officials asked residents to call 911 only for immediate emergencies.
