Search at Abrams Falls ends with recovery of missing Texas hiker
A 24-year-old Texas man who disappeared while hiking in Great Smoky Mountains National Park was found dead in the water at Abrams Falls after a dayslong search, his family said. Sahil Jilani was last seen about 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, at Riverstone Campground in Townsend, Tennessee, park officials said. His car was found Wednesday at the Abrams Falls trailhead. Divers located his body in the water the following day, according to his family. His phone, keys and clothing were found near the falls. The family believes Jilani drowned after being caught in strong currents near the waterfall. That account had not been confirmed by official reports as of Oct. 12. Jilani’s sister, Asma Jilani Bustamante, said the family grew alarmed when his location sharing stopped and he did not check in as he usually did. She said they contacted rangers to request a welfare check and continued seeking help as their concern increased. Bustamante described her brother as kind and generous, and said he had hoped to help his parents financially. He was also a new uncle who had looked forward to spending time with his niece. The family is seeking donations to help bring Jilani’s body to Houston and cover expenses related to his death, including care for their mother, who was hospitalized after his death, Bustamante said. The family also hopes to promote water safety in his memory. Bustamante urged visitors to heed warnings near waterfalls, share their travel plans and plan for areas without cellphone service. She also suggested carrying a satellite communication device in remote areas. Official findings on Jilani’s death were pending.
