Mecklenburg County brings in auditor as nature museum opening remains stalled

Mecklenburg County has hired an outside auditor to examine Discovery Place’s finances after the museum operator said it cannot pay the $14.6 million it owes the county for the newly renovated Charlotte Museum of Nature.

The review is expected to take until about mid-November, according to information released Oct. 23. The county is weighing a possible takeover of the museum, which has not opened. Discovery Place is expected to operate it.

The debt and the museum’s stalled opening put the county’s financial relationship with Discovery Place under scrutiny. The audit will give county officials an outside review of the organization’s finances as they consider what to do next.
