East Charlotte robbery suspect held without bond after SWAT standoff
Niyo McGee was arrested Wednesday after police tracked him to an East Charlotte home following an alleged $11,000 robbery outside a Bank of America branch. A judge ordered him held without bond, citing concerns about his court appearance and community safety.
A judge ordered Niyo McGee held without bond after his arrest Wednesday in connection with an alleged $11,000 robbery outside a Bank of America branch on Albemarle Road in Charlotte, according to court records and police dispatches.
Records say the victim had withdrawn the money shortly before 3 p.m. and was shoved and struck before the cash was taken. Police radio traffic indicated that no weapon was reported.
A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department aircraft tracked a person to a home in East Charlotte, where officers and a SWAT unit established a perimeter. After an hourslong standoff, negotiators urged the occupant to come out with hands raised. McGee then exited and was taken into custody.
McGee was charged with common law robbery and appeared before Judge Roderick Davis. Davis ordered him held without bond, writing that no conditions would reasonably ensure McGee’s appearance in court and protect community safety.
The charge is an allegation; the court records described the reported robbery. Bank of America declined to discuss the incident and referred questions to law enforcement.
