Floodwater shuts Burke County roads, parks and river access after Isaias

Flooding from Hurricane Isaias left several Burke County roads and public access points underwater Sunday, including areas near a mobile home park on Antioch Road. Two people were rescued from flash flooding, and officials reported no injuries in a vehicle crash on NC 126.

Floodwater shuts Burke County roads, parks and river access after Isaias
Flooding from Hurricane Isaias closed several roads and public access points in Burke County after storms moved through the area Saturday night, disrupting travel and mail delivery and prompting rescues. As of Sunday night, Antioch Road, Spainhour Road at Bost Road, Bethel Park, the Greenlee Ford access point and the John’s River Boat Ramp were closed, according to Burke County officials. A mobile home park along Antioch Road was among the hardest-hit locations. Neighbors voluntarily evacuated before the storm, officials said. Cara Holley, whose family lives in the area, said Sunday the water had risen higher than she remembered from previous floods. She was grateful no one had been hurt, she said. Angela Lewis, a Morganton postal worker, said flooding blocked her from crossing a bridge to reach nearby customers and their mailboxes. “This is not livable,” she said of the conditions residents faced. Burke County Deputy Public Information Officer Ali Rose said a car went off NC 126 and into a water-filled ditch Sunday; no injuries were reported. Two unhoused people living in woods behind Freedom High School were also rescued from flash flooding. “Overall, we did well,” Rose said, adding that the county had learned from the previous year about preparing and supporting one another.
