East Mecklenburg High put on Hold after students’ fight and mace discharge

A fight involving several students near the cafeteria at East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte prompted school officials to place the campus on Hold this week after mace was sprayed, district officials said.

The temporary Hold was intended to keep hallways clear, help staff de-escalate the altercation and allow the area to be ventilated. Classes continued as school administrators and security personnel intervened, officials said.

In a letter to families, Assistant Communications Officer Tom Miner said the district was sharing information so students could discuss what they had seen or heard. He said students’ safety and well-being remained the school’s priority.

Officials had not said whether the incident would lead to arrests, criminal charges or school discipline.
