East Charlotte pedestrian dies after crash; driver faces DWI charge
Christopher Easterling, 49, was killed Thursday evening after a car struck him on Eastway Drive. Police arrested the driver, Jacoa Stringfellow, on a driving-while-impaired charge as investigators continue to examine the crash.
A 49-year-old pedestrian died Thursday evening after being struck by a car on Eastway Drive in east Charlotte, and the driver was arrested on a charge of driving while impaired, police said.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police responded shortly after 7:26 p.m. to the 3600 block of Eastway Drive, near East Independence Boulevard. Emergency responders found Christopher Easterling with severe injuries in the roadway. MEDIC pronounced him dead at the scene.
Police said a preliminary investigation found that Jacoa Stringfellow, 41, was driving a Cadillac DTS north on Eastway Drive when the car struck Easterling. Stringfellow remained at the scene, and the vehicle had front-end damage.
Investigators said Easterling was crossing outside a marked crosswalk and was not wearing reflective clothing. Officers screened Stringfellow for impairment at the scene and arrested her on a DWI charge. She was booked into Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office custody. An arrest is not a determination of guilt.
CMPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit is continuing to investigate. Police said the department’s DWI Task Force and Crime Scene Search unit, along with MEDIC and the Charlotte Fire Department, also responded. Easterling’s next of kin have been notified.
