Belmont presses Charlotte airport for answers on potential flight-path noise
Belmont Mayor Joe Jordan plans to raise concerns about possible aircraft noise at a public forum as the FAA reviews flight paths ahead of Charlotte Douglas International Airport’s fourth runway. The airport expects to release a draft environmental review in November.
BELMONT, N.C. — Belmont Mayor Joe Jordan wants to know whether planned flight-path changes tied to Charlotte Douglas International Airport’s fourth runway could bring more aircraft noise over the city.
Jordan plans to raise the issue with airport leaders at the Noise Advisory Forum scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14. The Federal Aviation Administration is reviewing potential flight-path changes as the airport prepares to open the runway in 2027.
Jordan said Belmont recognizes the airport’s importance to the region’s economy, but residents should understand how the changes could affect their neighborhoods. He described the city as relatively quiet and said the potential impact on that atmosphere is a key concern.
Charlotte Douglas plans to publish a draft environmental review in November. The review is expected to examine potential noise, air-quality and other effects of the new runway, followed by a series of public meetings.
Mount Holly resident Jana Barker, who says she hears planes over her home, said aircraft can be distracting even indoors. She said she understands why Belmont residents would be concerned about added traffic, particularly given the calm atmosphere in downtown Belmont.
The fourth runway is intended to accommodate more flights and reduce delays. Once completed, Charlotte Douglas will be one of seven U.S. airports with at least four runways. Charlotte City Council approved a plan in 2024 to expand flight paths around the city, adding to questions about how aviation growth may affect nearby communities.
The airport holds Noise Advisory Forums every three months. The Oct. 14 meeting is an opportunity for Belmont residents and other community members to hear about the review and raise questions as the process continues.
