CMS board forms working group to address policy and procedure recommendations
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education has formed a working group to decide how to address shortcomings identified in recommendations on board policies and procedures, Chair Gregory “Dee” Rankin said at the board’s Tuesday, Oct. 13, meeting. The board briefly discussed the recommendations, which were delivered orally to members in August after a summer investigation into Superintendent Crystal Hill. The probe, conducted by the law firm Brooks Pierce, cost $379,000 and included 86 interviews and a review of 1.5 million documents. It found no wrongdoing by Hill. The board fired Hill on Sept. 22, days after she sent members a memo alleging financial mismanagement of district funds. The board did not ask Brooks Pierce for a written report of its findings. Instead, acting General Counsel Anna Hehenberger prepared an 18-page account of the investigation, which the board made public at its September meeting. Rankin’s statement signals that the board intends to consider changes to its own policies and procedures following the investigation. The recommendations concern district governance, while the investigation’s findings did not substantiate wrongdoing by Hill.
