Charlotte’s record October heat gives way to a cold, breezy weekend

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A strong cold front is forecast to bring a sharp weekend cooldown to the Carolinas after Charlotte reached 90 degrees Thursday, setting a record for the latest 90-degree day in the city’s recorded history.

Another record could be possible Friday, when temperatures are expected to climb into the mid- to upper 80s. Winds are forecast to strengthen in the afternoon ahead of the front, which is expected to move through Friday night.

Clouds and a few showers may linger into Saturday morning. Gusty winds are expected to bring drier, cooler air later in the day, with highs topping out in the upper 50s to low 60s.

Sunday morning temperatures are forecast to fall into the 30s and 40s across the region. In Charlotte, lows are expected to be around the low 40s, though wind may make it feel closer to the 30s. Afternoon sunshine is forecast to lift temperatures only into the low 60s.

The cold start could bring frost to mountain and foothill communities, particularly during the morning. Temperatures are expected to rebound next week, with highs returning to the 70s for much of the week.
