Atrium Health targets 2028 opening for 168-bed north Charlotte behavioral hospital

Atrium Health plans to open a 168-bed behavioral health hospital in north Charlotte in 2028, adding inpatient, emergency and outpatient services for children and adults.

The health system said Oct. 15 it will renovate a building in the University City area near Mallard Creek. The project is part of a five-year, $340 million investment in behavioral health. Atrium has not said how much of that funding will go toward the new facility.

Plans include a behavioral health emergency department and an expanded crisis stabilization unit offering short-term inpatient care for people experiencing mental health or substance use crises. Adult inpatient services will include procedural and device-based therapies. Outpatient care is planned to include therapy, medication management and intensive treatment programs for patients of any age.

The investment comes amid broader hospital expansion plans in the Charlotte region. Duke Health and CaroMont Health have proposed hospitals near University City and in the River District that could open as early as 2031, pending state approval.
