Two York County sheriff’s deputies shot a man on Lloyd White Road near the North Carolina-South Carolina line on Oct. 14, after a pursuit ended with the man’s vehicle in a ditch, officials said.
The sheriff’s office said deputies were assisting Clover police in locating a suspect with outstanding warrants who had reportedly threatened to harm himself. At about 11:30 a.m., a deputy found the man and attempted to stop his vehicle.
According to the sheriff’s office, the man did not follow commands, struck the deputy’s vehicle and drove away. The deputy pursued him until the vehicle crashed into a ditch on Lloyd White Road, a few hundred yards from the state line.
Officials said the man pointed a gun at a deputy after getting out of the wrecked vehicle, prompting two deputies to fire. First aid was provided immediately. The sheriff’s office did not say whether the man survived.
No deputies were hurt. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is reviewing the shooting, and the deputies involved have been placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation.
