Charlotte teen charged after wrong-way I-277 crash kills two

A 19-year-old woman was arrested Sunday after a wrong-way crash on Charlotte’s I-277 left two people dead and others seriously injured, police said.

Kati Covarrubias-Barron faces two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of felony serious injury by vehicle and a misdemeanor reckless-driving charge. The charges are allegations; they have not been proven in court.

The crash happened shortly after midnight on the Brookshire Freeway inner loop near Independence Boulevard. Police said Covarrubias-Barron entered I-277, slowed down, made a U-turn and drove against traffic. Surveillance video reportedly showed the turn happening without her headlights on. She then traveled about a mile at roughly 58 mph before colliding with a Hyundai moving in the correct direction, according to records. The Hyundai struck a third vehicle afterward.

The Hyundai’s driver died at the scene, police said. Its front passenger later died at a hospital. Two other Hyundai passengers were being treated for serious injuries, including injuries described in arrest records as a broken femur and an internal injury involving an organ laceration.

Police said Covarrubias-Barron was suspected of impairment and screened at a hospital, where she was found to be impaired. Records say she told officers she had consumed about five drinks over two hours. Records also show she had never held a valid driver’s license.

The crash shut down a stretch of a major route through central Charlotte and left multiple people with life-threatening injuries. Police have not publicly identified the people who died in the information available about the case.
