Lancaster County deputies seek identity after remains found near South Potter Road

LANCASTER, S.C. — Deputies are working to identify human skeletal remains found Saturday afternoon in a field off South Potter Road in Lancaster County.

The remains were discovered at about 12:45 p.m. Oct. 17, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies said they appeared to have been there for an extended period. A duffel bag containing personal effects was found nearby and has given detectives leads as they try to determine who the person was.

No evidence of foul play has been found so far, authorities said. The circumstances of the person’s death and how long the remains had been at the site have not been established publicly.

“We know very little at this early stage in the investigation,” Sheriff Barry Faile said, adding that investigators hope examination of the remains and nearby belongings will help identify the person. He asked anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s office.
