Two Boston police officers were hospitalized after an arrest in the South End on Monday evening, following a confrontation that witnesses described as chaotic. Police said the officers are expected to be OK and have increased patrols nearby to reassure residents and visitors.
Officers were called to Blackstone Square after reports that a man was chasing people and kicking dogs, according to police. They identified the man as Sharknell Matthews, 26, of Cambridge. Police allege Matthews walked away after being ordered to stop, then took a fighting stance and punched an officer in the face while trying to enter a building on Newton Street.
The second officer used a Taser, but police said Matthews continued to resist after getting back up. Additional officers and civilians helped take him into custody. Matthews was also taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Witness Paul Reinhardt said he saw an officer thrown during the struggle. He recalled hearing that a dog had been kicked and described a crowd gathering as the incident moved through the park. Another witness, Maria Canales, said Matthews wore a mask that left only his eyes visible.
Matthews appeared in court on charges that include assault and battery on a police officer. A not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf, and his attorney said he is unhoused.
City Councilor Ed Flynn, who represents the area, called for tougher penalties for assaults on first responders. The stepped-up patrols are intended to address neighborhood concerns following the incident.
