State regulators have moved to revoke the licenses held by RegalCare, a New Jersey-based operator of 12 Massachusetts nursing homes. The homes will remain under the company’s control for now, with the state promising enhanced monitoring.

Massachusetts seeks to revoke licenses at all 12 RegalCare nursing homes
Massachusetts regulators moved Tuesday, Oct. 13, to revoke the licenses for all 12 nursing homes operated in the state by RegalCare, a New Jersey-based company whose care practices have drawn scrutiny. The action does not immediately transfer control of the facilities. State Department of Public Health officials said the homes will remain with RegalCare for the time being and face enhanced monitoring. RegalCare expanded in Massachusetts after the pandemic, acquiring nursing homes and making steep reductions in nursing and other services, according to reporting on the company’s operations. Its chief executive, Eli Mirlis, purchased the facilities and directed funds to businesses he owns, that reporting found. The state’s move follows that scrutiny. At RegalCare at Taunton, the federal quality rating dropped from five stars to one after the company bought the home in late 2022. For residents and families, the immediate question is how the state’s increased oversight will affect day-to-day care while the licensing action proceeds. The announced move does not mean the homes are changing hands now.
