Triton Regional senior dies in Route 1 crash in Revere

A senior at Triton Regional High School in Byfield died early Sunday after a head-on crash on Route 1 in Revere, Massachusetts State Police said. Authorities have not publicly identified the student.

The crash happened at about 3 a.m. near Sargent Street. State police and Revere and Saugus officers received multiple 911 calls reporting a vehicle traveling south in the highway’s northbound lanes. Officers were responding when the vehicles collided, police said.

The student’s vehicle caught fire and was fully engulfed. The student died at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries and was taken to a Boston hospital.

Triton Regional Superintendent Brian Forget described the student as kind and caring and said the loss had left the school community heartbroken. The school plans to have grief counselors available throughout the week.

All lanes of Route 1 were closed until about 8:15 a.m. Sunday. State police are investigating the crash.
