Anthony Matarazzo of New Jersey was arrested Saturday after police responded to attempted or reported robberies at three downtown Boston banks. No gun was recovered, though one employee told police the suspect claimed to have one.
A 68-year-old New Jersey man was arrested Saturday after a series of incidents at three Boston banks unfolded within about half an hour, police said.
Officers were called to East West Bank, 68 Harrison Ave., at about 12:17 p.m. The employee told police a man passed a note demanding $200. The employee refused, and the man left after several minutes, according to police.
At about 12:38 p.m., officers responded to a robbery in progress at Cathay Bank, 621 Washington St. An employee said the same suspect passed a note demanding $200 and claimed he had a gun. The man left with an undisclosed amount of money, police said.
Six minutes later, police received a report of a robbery at the Bank of America at 630 Washington St. Officers detained a man matching the description provided in the earlier incidents. An employee said the man had passed a note indicating he intended to rob the bank, but the employee refused, police said.
Police identified the arrested man as Anthony Matarazzo. During booking, officers recovered a note from his chest pocket and an undisclosed amount of money. Police said they did not recover a gun.
Matarazzo is expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on an armed robbery charge. The allegations have not been tested in court.
