Somerville installs pavement ridges on Community Path as speed reminders
Somerville has begun adding rumble strips to its popular shared-use path, aiming to remind cyclists and other riders to slow down. The new markings include a set at the Cedar Street intersection.
Somerville has been installing raised rumble strips along the Somerville Community Path in recent weeks, adding a physical cue for people riding bikes, e-bikes, scooters and other vehicles to slow down.
The strips interrupt the path’s smooth pavement and are intended to be felt as riders pass over them. A set of white thermoplastic lines has been placed at the Cedar Street intersection.
The path is used by commuters as well as pedestrians, dog-walkers and children, making speed a shared-space concern. The markings are a reminder, not a barrier, and the available details do not establish whether they will reduce riding speeds.
