Hazmat response follows overnight fire at Newburyport chemical facility
Fire crews responded to a fire at 7 Mullikan Way shortly after 11 p.m. Friday, with sprinklers already operating and a hazardous-materials response called. No injuries were reported; the cause remains under investigation.
Firefighters from Newburyport and surrounding communities extinguished an overnight fire at a chemical facility at 7 Mullikan Way, clearing the scene around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, officials said. No injuries were reported.
Newburyport firefighters were dispatched shortly after 11 p.m. Friday after reports of an active fire. They arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the building, where the sprinkler system had already activated, according to the Fire Department.
Because the fire was at a chemical facility, officials declared a hazardous-materials incident and requested additional resources. The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services’ Hazardous Emergency Response Division responded.
Mutual aid came from the Newbury, Merrimack, West Newbury, Amesbury and Salisbury fire departments. Groveland, Georgetown, Ipswich and Seabrook, New Hampshire, provided station coverage while crews were at the scene.
The Fire Department did not identify the company at the site. The address is listed for Strem Chemicals. Officials have not released a cause, and the fire remains under investigation.
