Newton stabbing case turns on conflicting accounts of encounter after minor crash
A 28-year-old man pleaded not guilty to a dangerous-weapon assault charge after a 60-year-old was stabbed during a confrontation on Drumlin Road. Prosecutors say the older man was stabbed while seeking information after a car collision; the defense says video shows him approaching the driver and telling him to get out.
A 28-year-old man accused of stabbing a 60-year-old during a confrontation in Newton pleaded not guilty Tuesday, as prosecutors and his defense offered sharply different accounts of what happened after a reported vehicle collision.
Albeldy Manuel Pinales-Villar was arraigned in Newton District Court on a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. The judge set bail at $5,000 and ordered him to have no contact with the alleged victim. Pinales-Villar is due back in court Nov. 10.
The incident happened around 2 p.m. Monday on Drumlin Road, police said. According to prosecutors, Pinales-Villar struck the other man’s car as the 60-year-old was leaving his home. The older man tried to get him to stop and exchange information, prosecutors said, but Pinales-Villar passed him and blocked his car in.
Prosecutors said the 60-year-old got out and approached Pinales-Villar to obtain his information, then was stabbed in the ribs. Pinales-Villar left the scene, they said. The injured man was taken to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston with injuries that were not considered life-threatening and was later released.
Police used Pinales-Villar’s license plate to locate him at his home and arrest him, according to the account presented in court.
A prosecutor argued for stricter release conditions, including that Pinales-Villar not drive, remain at home and possess no dangerous weapons. The prosecutor called the alleged attack on a stranger over a minor road incident a public-safety concern. The judge set bail but did not impose those additional conditions, according to the court account.
Defense attorney Christine Breslin disputed that the cars made contact. She said two videos show the 60-year-old approaching Pinales-Villar’s car and telling him to get out. Breslin said Pinales-Villar recorded one video, which she described as showing the full incident, and argued that her client was protecting himself from someone approaching him aggressively.
The charge is an allegation, and the competing accounts have not been resolved in court.
