Cambridge man arrested after shooting near Russell Field

A man has been arrested in connection with a shooting near Russell Field in North Cambridge earlier this month, police said.

Jayven McNealy was arrested Tuesday and charged with armed assault to murder, aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and carrying a firearm without a license. He is expected to be arraigned in Cambridge District Court.

Multiple people called 911 to report gunfire near the park on Oct. 6. The victim, a 47-year-old man, was walking with his girlfriend, Tutu Walker, when he was shot in the middle of the afternoon, Walker said.

Walker said the shooter approached unexpectedly and was unknown to the couple. Russell Field, on Rindge Avenue, has athletic fields used by students. Walker said she did not see children there that day.

The charges are allegations; McNealy is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
