Severna Park students hold vigil for freshman Ryan Beales after fatal crash
Ryan Beales, 14, died Thursday night after a collision involving a pickup truck and an electric dirt-bike-style vehicle at Robinson Road and the B&A Trail. Friends and family gathered at the site Friday, while the school arranged counseling and other support for students and staff.
SEVERNA PARK, Md. — Students, friends and family gathered Friday at Robinson Road to remember Ryan Beales, a 14-year-old Severna Park High School freshman who died the night before from injuries sustained in a crash there.
Anne Arundel County police said officers responded at about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday to a collision involving a Dodge Ram traveling east on Robinson Road and an electric dirt-bike-style vehicle traveling south from the B&A Trail. Beales was taken to a hospital in critical condition and died Thursday night.
Beales was a new student at the high school. His older sister, Sophie Bresnan, said he enjoyed taking things apart and rebuilding them, including his bike and a computer. He also loved fishing, she said, and was always working on something.
Friends remembered him as caring and joyful. Austin Machovec, a fellow freshman, said Beales was someone friends could count on. Another classmate, Robert Wooten, said spending time with him brought happiness.
The school’s principal sent a letter to families about the death and the support available to students. Anne Arundel County Public Schools spokesperson Bob Mosier said the school had mobilized counseling and other resources for students and staff, and would keep them available as long as needed.
Friday’s gathering at the crash site gave the school community a place to remember Beales and support one another as they grieve.
