Dali engineer’s return to Baltimore delayed after U.S. travel restriction, attorneys say

The chief engineer of the cargo ship Dali was prevented from boarding a flight from India to Baltimore on Monday after U.S. Customs and Border Protection intervened, his attorneys said.

Karthikeyan Deenadayalan had been visiting family in India. His lawyers said he is ready to return to the United States once the travel issue is resolved. The agency’s reason for stopping him was not provided in the information available about the incident.

Deenadayalan was indicted in connection with the Dali’s collision with the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed in March 2024 and killed six people. He later entered a deferred prosecution agreement, under which the charges can be dismissed if he meets specified conditions.

The travel disruption leaves uncertain when Deenadayalan can resume his return to Baltimore. His attorneys did not provide further details about the restriction or the steps being taken to resolve it.
