Man critically wounded in Baltimore police shooting on Erdman Avenue
A Baltimore officer shot a man after, police say, he ran and pointed a handgun at the officer in the Belair-Edison neighborhood. The man was hospitalized in critical condition, and the Maryland Attorney General’s Office was notified of the shooting.
A man was critically injured in a police shooting Thursday afternoon in the 3900 block of Erdman Avenue in Baltimore’s Belair-Edison neighborhood, according to city officials.
The encounter began shortly after 12:15 p.m. on Oct. 22, when an officer assigned to a crime-suppression initiative approached the man from a marked patrol car, Baltimore Police Chief of Patrol Ryan Lee said. The man ran, and the officer pursued him, police said.
Lee said the man then pulled out a firearm and pointed it at the officer, who fired several rounds and struck him. Officers provided aid before the man was taken to a nearby hospital. Police said they believe he is an adult but had not confirmed his identity. A semiautomatic handgun was recovered at the scene.
Police have not said what led to the encounter or why the man fled. Officials said the officer was working overtime as part of an initiative responding to concerns about recent activity in the neighborhood.
The Baltimore Police Department’s Special Investigations Response Team is investigating. The Maryland Attorney General’s Office has been notified and will conduct an investigation, Mayor Brandon Scott said.
Scott said his Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement would organize a coordinated neighborhood response to provide trauma-informed support. He also said no one else was injured.
