Pflugerville dog death investigation leads to arrest of 64-year-old man
A 64-year-old man was arrested Tuesday in connection with an Austin police investigation into dogs found in poor conditions at a Pflugerville property, authorities said. Police identified the man as Nelson Egwu. The department said its Animal Cruelty Unit issued two arrest warrants for him last month on suspicion of cruelty to non-livestock animals. As of Tuesday afternoon, he had not appeared in the Travis County court portal, according to the information available at the time. The investigation began Aug. 31, when officers responded to the 13600 block of Coomer Path after receiving a report about dogs kept in a garage in reportedly unlivable conditions. Investigators found excessive heat, inadequate ventilation and substantial amounts of urine and feces, Animal Cruelty Detective Christian Esquivel said. Police said one dog was found dead in a kennel. A second was underweight and chained in an area contaminated with waste. Officers also found a third dog, but police did not provide details about its condition. The two surviving dogs were given food and water and taken to Austin Animal Services for evaluation. Police said they were expected to recover fully and would be made available for adoption. A necropsy conducted Sept. 2 found that the dead dog died from heat exposure, potentially compounded by dehydration and poor body condition, police said.
