Lago Vista police Officer Brandon Carey died Wednesday, Sept. 30, while off duty and outside the city limits, the city said in a statement Sunday, Oct. 4. Carey was suspended from duty at the time of his death while a Travis County criminal investigation was underway, according to the city. The Travis County Sheriff’s Office is conducting both the criminal investigation and the investigation into Carey’s death. The city did not disclose the circumstances of the death, saying it would not discuss confidential investigative information or speculate while the investigations continue. Carey’s family was notified after his death, and police department employees were informed Saturday. The city said mental health professionals were made available to department staff. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Carey family, the employees of the Lago Vista Police Department, and our community,” the city said.
