Austin police are investigating after a deceased, non-viable fetus was found Monday evening in a parking lot at Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Park in southeast Austin. Officers were dispatched at about 6:41 p.m. Oct. 12 for a welfare check after a caller reported what they believed was a deceased child, an Austin Police Department spokesperson said. Detectives are treating the case as a suspicious death, but police said it is not being investigated as a homicide. Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances or the investigation. Texas does not require a death certificate for a fetus weighing less than 350 grams or from a pregnancy under 20 completed weeks, according to the state Department of State Health Services. State rules governing the handling of fetal tissue at health care facilities do not apply to remains expelled or removed outside a health care facility.
