After 45 years, Wheatsville’s Guadalupe store will shut Oct. 25
Wheatsville Food Co-op says rising occupancy costs, falling sales and uncertainty over planned Guadalupe construction made its longtime store unsustainable. The co-op will hold a farewell event there before moving its rooftop dinosaur, Mangia, to its South Lamar location.
Wheatsville Food Co-op will close its Guadalupe store on Oct. 25, ending a 45-year run at the Austin location, the co-op announced Monday. Its South Lamar store will remain open as the co-op’s anchor location going forward.
The co-op cited rising occupancy costs, declining sales and uncertainty about how it could operate during anticipated construction along Guadalupe as reasons the store could no longer be sustained. It said the decision was not made lightly.
The closure also means a move for Mangia, the dinosaur sculpture atop the Guadalupe store. The co-op plans to relocate the sculpture to its South Lamar store, where it will be placed in the produce section.
Wheatsville has invited the community to gather at the Guadalupe location at 10 a.m. Oct. 25 to say goodbye and watch Mangia be lowered by crane before its move. The co-op described the sculpture as a symbol of Austin’s character and resilience.
