Austin crash leaves 21-year-old with multiple fractures; accused driver faces intoxication assault charge
Avery Kate Thompson, 21, says she was stopped at a red light in southeast Austin when another car hit hers around 1:30 a.m. Oct. 3, leaving her with fractures to her skull, hips, tailbone and ribs, as well as facial injuries. The crash happened at East Riverside Drive and Ben White Boulevard. Thompson said she had been heading to Waffle House. After spending several days in the hospital, she is now home in a wheelchair and has a caretaker, she said. “I’m just not me anymore,” Thompson said, describing the impact on her life as a fitness influencer who was accustomed to being active. Austin police arrested Isaiah Calvo, 26, and charged him with intoxication assault causing serious bodily injury. Police said he also was treated at a hospital. The crash remains under investigation, and a charge is an allegation, not a finding of guilt. Court records show Calvo was released on bond after the crash arrest. Conditions include staying away from Thompson and installing an ignition interlock device in his car. His next court proceeding is scheduled for Oct. 19. Records also show Calvo had a separate criminal case pending at the time of the crash, stemming from a December 2025 incident. The arrest records say Calvo and two others were arrested near Sixth Street for evading arrest and that an infant was left in a car as they were taken to the Travis County jail. The records describe allegations; they do not establish guilt in that case. Thompson said she was angry that Calvo was out on bond. Calvo’s attorney had not responded to a request for comment by the time of publication.
