Virginia Tech’s fast start hands Georgia Tech 34-24 loss, tightening bowl path
Georgia Tech fell to 2-4 after Virginia Tech built a three-touchdown first-half lead and held on in Blacksburg. The Yellow Jackets now need four wins in their final six games to reach bowl eligibility.
Georgia Tech’s momentum from a win over previously unbeaten Duke lasted one week. The Yellow Jackets lost 34-24 to Virginia Tech on Saturday in Blacksburg, leaving them 2-4 overall and 1-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
Virginia Tech seized control early, building a three-touchdown lead in the first half. Georgia Tech mounted a third-quarter comeback attempt, but the deficit proved too large to overcome. The loss came as the Yellow Jackets had a chance to even their record and stay in the early ACC race.
Georgia Tech now needs to win four of its final six games to reach the six-win mark generally required for bowl eligibility. Its next game is against Boston College at Bobby Dodd Stadium on Saturday. The Eagles are 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the ACC.
The remaining schedule also includes games against Pittsburgh, Louisville, Wake Forest and Clemson, leaving the Yellow Jackets little margin for error after consecutive weeks of sharply different results.
