Auburn’s late surge stuns Georgia as McPherson wins it at the buzzer

ATHENS, Ga. — Auburn erased an early 14-point deficit and dealt No. 1 Georgia a 27-24 loss Saturday, winning on Alex McPherson’s 34-yard field goal as time expired.

The Tigers took control after Georgia’s fast start, scoring 24 straight points to move ahead 24-14. Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown powered the comeback with 115 rushing yards and a touchdown on 26 carries, along with a scoring pass.

Georgia answered in the fourth quarter. Peyton Woodring’s 42-yard field goal cut the margin, then Gunner Stockton directed a 94-yard drive in 13 plays, tying the game with a 4-yard touchdown pass to London Humphreys.

The Bulldogs had a chance to take the lead, but Stockton fumbled on a run from the Auburn 46-yard line with 58 seconds left. Auburn safety Sylvester Smith-Reed recovered, and a roughing-the-passer penalty against Georgia’s Gabe Harris Jr. helped the Tigers move into position for McPherson’s winning kick.

Stockton also threw two interceptions, twice his season total entering the game. Georgia was further hampered by three personal-foul penalties. Running back Nate Frazier, back from a rib injury, managed 19 yards on nine carries.

Georgia (6-1, 4-1 Southeastern Conference) opened with a touchdown run by Dwight Phillips and a 24-yard Stockton pass to tight end Lawson Luckie. Stockton had briefly left the game after taking a helmet-first hit on the opening play; Ryan Puglisi completed all three of his passes while filling in, including a 41-yard completion to Craig Dandridge Jr.

Auburn (4-2, 2-2) snapped Georgia’s nine-game winning streak in the rivalry and ended the Bulldogs’ run of 53 consecutive victories over unranked opponents. The defeat also comes a week after Texas, then ranked No. 1, lost to unranked Oklahoma.

Georgia is off next weekend before facing Florida at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Oct. 31, with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
