A 7-month-old girl and a driver died after a high-speed Georgia State Patrol pursuit ended in a 10-vehicle crash over the weekend, Georgia public safety officials said.
The infant, Kalayia Tolbert, was taken to a hospital and later died from her injuries, according to the Georgia Department of Public Safety. Cameron Kemp, the driver accused of fleeing troopers, also died after being hospitalized.
Officials said troopers began pursuing Kemp after spotting him driving at high speed on I-20. The pursuit ended near Wesley Chapel Road, where the vehicle lost control and collided with other vehicles. The crash involved 10 vehicles, and others were injured.
“The loss of a child is heartbreaking,” the department said in a statement, extending its thoughts to Tolbert’s family.
The deaths followed a pursuit on public roads that culminated in a chain-reaction crash involving multiple vehicles. The department has not provided further details about the injured people or the circumstances of the crash.
