After 29 years, DNA confirms remains found near Conyers belong to Tammy Fortson
Skeletal remains found near Christian Circle in 2016 have been identified as Tammy Fortson, who went missing from Conyers in 1997, police said Monday, Oct. 12, 2026. The circumstances of her death remain under investigation. Fortson disappeared from the Fox Chase Court area, Conyers police said. Christian Circle was among the last places she was seen. Investigators sent some of the remains to the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification in 2019, but were unable to confirm an identity. A detective reopened work on the case in 2024 and sought further forensic testing from the center. DNA analysis found the remains were about 104 million times more likely to belong to the biological child of a woman identified by police as Ms. Beckhold than to an unrelated person, according to the department. With assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the medical examiner, authorities confirmed Fortson’s identity in July. Conyers police called the identification a major development in a case that had remained unresolved for years, saying they hoped it would offer Fortson’s family some answers. Police said the investigation into what happened to her is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Newton County Sheriff’s Office at 470-426-4294.
