President Donald Trump was expected to announce plans for a Volkswagen-owned Audi plant near Fort Valley during a rally in Perry. Volkswagen expected to put Audi factory near Fort Valley, expanding Georgia’s auto corridor

A new Audi factory is expected to be built near Fort Valley in Peach County, a project that could bring a major manufacturing employer to Middle Georgia and further expand Georgia’s role in the auto industry.

President Donald Trump was set to spotlight the planned plant at a rally Saturday in Perry, about 20 miles from the proposed site. The facility would be developed by Audi’s parent company, Volkswagen, according to Bloomberg News and people familiar with the negotiations.

The site is on the north side of Georgia 96, roughly five miles west of Interstate 75 on Fort Valley’s eastern outskirts. The announcement was still pending, and key details — including the investment amount, construction schedule and number of jobs — had not been made public.

A large auto plant could reshape the local economy, but its effects would depend on the jobs created, wages, infrastructure needs and any public incentives tied to the project. Those details were not available before the expected announcement.

The proposed factory would add to a growing network of automotive operations in Georgia. Hyundai runs an electric-vehicle plant near Savannah, Kia has a factory in West Georgia, and electric-vehicle startup Rivian is planning a facility east of Atlanta.

State and local officials have promoted Middle Georgia’s industrial sites as a way to attract large employers. The Audi project would bring that push to Peach County, though the public terms of any development agreement had not been disclosed.
