Specialized Athens-Clarke crew extracts man from collapsed porch in Oglethorpe County

A man was rescued Friday evening after falling about 20 feet through a concrete porch in Oglethorpe County, according to the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department.

The department’s Technical Rescue Team responded to assist local crews. Broken concrete remained unstable above the man, creating a hazard during the rescue, the department said.

Rescuers cleared away the concrete, then used mechanical equipment and a specialized stretcher to raise him. They brought him through an opening in a basement wall and handed him over to emergency medical personnel.

The man was taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center. His condition was not immediately available.

Fire Chief Nate Moss said the operation relied on specialized training, careful decisions and coordination among responding agencies.
