Sandy Springs police review Morgan Falls Park stop after woman alleges racial profiling
Sandy Springs police are investigating an encounter between an officer and Marron Bridges at Morgan Falls Park after Bridges filed a complaint and said she believes she was racially profiled. The encounter took place Wednesday, Oct. 7. Bridges posted videos of it on social media, where they had drawn nearly 150,000 likes and 20,000 comments by Thursday, Oct. 8. In the footage, Bridges is walking with earbuds in as an officer drives alongside her and asks whether she is on the phone. The officer later asks for her identification. Bridges repeatedly asks why she is being questioned and says the interaction is embarrassing. At one point, she asks nearby park visitors to stay with her. In a parking area, Bridges tells the officer he can get her identification from her purse in her vehicle and offers to let him enter the car. She later said she gave permission because she did not want the situation to escalate. After checking and returning her identification, the officer says police are conducting an investigation at the park and tells her she must leave because the park is closed. At least four police vehicles appear briefly in the video. Sandy Springs police spokesman Sgt. G. Gomez confirmed the department is conducting an active investigation involving an incident at the park Wednesday. He did not provide details about why the officer approached Bridges or say whether she is a subject of the investigation. Bridges said she was visiting Morgan Falls Park for the first time and exploring. She filed a complaint with the department Thursday. The investigation’s findings have not been announced.
