Five DeKalb jail detainees charged after David Addo-Wright’s death
Five inmates face murder and other charges in the death of David Addo-Wright, 24, who was found wounded in his DeKalb County Jail cell on Sept. 23. His family and attorney have called for accountability and raised concerns about jail security.
Five inmates at the DeKalb County Jail have been charged in connection with the death of David Addo-Wright, 24, who was found with multiple wounds in his cell on Sept. 23, authorities said Thursday, Oct. 8.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Amir Andrews, Dajuhn Bryant, Treonte Brintley, Messiah Hinson and Jayden King face charges of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, possessing prohibited items and tampering with evidence. The charges are allegations; the defendants have not been convicted.
Addo-Wright was taken to a hospital after being found unresponsive and was pronounced dead there. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to investigate.
“We appreciate the GBI for its work on this case,” Sheriff Melody M. Maddox said in a statement. She offered condolences to Addo-Wright’s family and said her office would continue cooperating with investigators and prosecutors.
At a news conference last week, Addo-Wright’s relatives and their attorneys called for accountability from the sheriff’s office. Attorney Mawuli Davis said six men attacked Addo-Wright and alleged that some locks inside the jail were broken. Davis also said he believed unchecked gang activity may have been connected to the killing. Those claims have not been detailed in the charges announced by the GBI.
The family said Addo-Wright had been in custody for less than 48 hours after being booked following a fight, and had already posted bond when he was killed. The announcement of charges does not resolve the family’s questions about how the attack occurred or the jail’s security; the investigation and prosecution are continuing.
