Newnan teen’s family seeks answers after reviewing police body-camera footage

The family of Zadarious Dorsey, an 18-year-old fatally shot by a Newnan police officer, planned to hold a news conference Thursday after reviewing body-camera footage of the Oct. 3 encounter.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says Dorsey ran from an officer after a vehicle was stopped and pulled out a gun. Investigators said the officer ordered Dorsey to drop it before firing. The footage’s contents were not described in the information available ahead of the family’s news conference.

Dorsey’s relatives have called for answers about the officer’s actions, including why the vehicle was initially followed, when emergency lights were activated and when backup was requested.

“He wasn’t no criminal. He was somebody, and I loved him,” Dorsey’s aunt, Angela Brown, said.

Dorsey was a senior at Newnan High School and planned to join the Navy after graduation, his family said. The Coweta County NAACP has also become involved, and the family has retained civil rights attorney Ben Crump.

The case is under investigation by the GBI. The family’s planned public comments follow its review of the body-camera video and come amid continuing questions from relatives about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
