Apalachee names Alex Savakinas acting football coach after Kenyon resigns
Interim coach Charles Kenyon resigned Wednesday as the Barrow County School District investigates reports that he used racially derogatory language. Alex Savakinas will take over as acting head coach.
BARROW COUNTY, Ga. — Charles Kenyon resigned Wednesday as interim head football coach at Apalachee High School while the Barrow County School District investigates reports that he used racially derogatory language, the district confirmed.
Coach Alex Savakinas will serve as acting head coach. Principal Jessica Rehberg did not provide details about the investigation but said the school and district expect students, staff and visitors to be treated with dignity and respect.
“Any inappropriate or unprofessional statement or behavior, even if intended or represented as a ‘joke,’ will be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated,” Rehberg wrote in a letter to the community.
She thanked Savakinas for his leadership, guidance, experience and dedication to the team.
Savakinas is the fourth person to lead Apalachee’s football program since a shooting at the school in September 2024. Mike Hancock resigned months after the shooting, citing a need to focus on his mental health and well-being. Kevin Saunders was then named head coach and later resigned; Kenyon subsequently served as interim coach.
