Apalachee football team turns to fourth coach since 2024 shooting as Kenyon resigns

Apalachee High School football coach Charles Kenyon resigned Wednesday as Barrow County Schools investigates allegations involving racially derogatory language, the district said Thursday.

Alex Savakinas will serve as acting head coach. The school system has not publicly detailed the allegations or said whether the investigation will continue after Kenyon’s resignation.

“Any inappropriate or unprofessional statement or behavior, even if intended or represented as a ‘joke,’ will be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated,” a district spokesperson said.

Savakinas will be the team’s fourth head coach since a 2024 shooting at the school killed teachers Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie and students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo. Aspinwall was also an assistant football coach.

Head coach Mike Hancock resigned about six months after the shooting, citing mental health. Kevin Saunders then led the team before resigning after one season, making way for Kenyon.
