Mother and boy die in Waters Road house fire; man and second child escape
A woman and a child died after a house fire on Waters Road in Atlanta on Wednesday night, and a man and another boy escaped with minor injuries and smoke inhalation, fire officials said. Atlanta Fire Rescue was called at about 8:45 p.m. after receiving reports that a mother and her two sons were trapped inside. Firefighters arrived within five minutes and found flames coming from all sides of the home, Battalion Chief Andrew Anderson said. The man and one boy made it out. The woman and the other boy did not survive. Their names have not been released. Anderson said investigators’ early assessment suggests the fire began near a couch, though the cause has not been determined. The adults tried to put out the flames before calling 911. The man went outside to get water, but the fire had grown too large for him to re-enter, officials said. Anderson called the incident a tragedy and said firefighters had done their best to rescue those inside. He urged people to call 911 immediately when a fire occurs, even if they are unsure whether it qualifies as an emergency.
