Gainesville toddler dies after SUV strikes father and child near Publix
GAINESVILLE, Ga. — A 22-month-old boy died Wednesday after a vehicle struck him and his father outside a grocery store at Limestone Marketplace, Gainesville police said. Police identified the child as Knox Skelton. He was being carried by his father, Samuel Skelton, an off-duty Gainesville firefighter, as they walked toward Publix when a 2024 Ford Edge went over the curb and hit them, authorities said. The driver, 68-year-old Teresa Parker, was attempting to park in a handicap-accessible space when the vehicle accelerated over the curb, according to police. The circumstances of the crash are still being investigated. Bystanders rushed to help and performed CPR on Knox before paramedics arrived. He was flown to a children’s hospital in Atlanta, where he later died, police said. His father was also struck but did not require medical treatment. The vehicle also damaged Big Peach Running Co. The business said it would remain closed while it assessed the damage. Police have not announced further details about the investigation.
