Isaias forecast to bring storm risk to Georgia late this week
Tropical Storm Isaias could bring heavy rain, strong wind gusts and some tornadoes to North and Middle Georgia from Friday evening through Saturday, forecasters said Wednesday. The exact effects on metro Atlanta remain uncertain and will depend on the storm’s track. Isaias was over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico Wednesday afternoon. The National Hurricane Center forecast the storm to strengthen into the Atlantic season’s first hurricane by Thursday, move north past the Yucatán Peninsula and make landfall as a hurricane late Friday or early Saturday somewhere between southeastern Louisiana and the Florida Panhandle. The National Weather Service’s Atlanta office said widespread rain and gusty winds were the most likely local impacts, while emphasizing that the forecast could change. Heavy rain may add to flooding concerns in places that have already had saturated conditions. The storm could also produce isolated severe weather, including tornadoes. The weather could affect Georgia fans traveling to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for Saturday night’s Georgia-Alabama football game. The University of Alabama said it was monitoring conditions and had no plans to change the game as of Wednesday. Travelers and residents should follow updated forecasts as Isaias moves toward the Gulf Coast.
