Lumpkin County arrest followed online threat against family member, federal complaint says
Michael Shane Fortner was arrested after investigators tracked him toward Lumpkin County following a Facebook post threatening a family member, according to a federal criminal complaint. Deputies found a loaded handgun in his truck; he is being held without bond.
A man was arrested in Lumpkin County after investigators say he posted a threat on Facebook to shoot a family member and drove toward the county with a loaded handgun in his truck.
Michael Shane Fortner posted the threat on Oct. 6, according to a federal criminal complaint. The post also warned people to stay out of Lumpkin County, saying he planned to “erase the evil from that town today.”
Investigators used cellphone location information and Flock license-plate reader cameras to follow Fortner’s movements toward the county, the complaint says. FBI agents contacted the person identified as the intended target and coordinated with the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies arrested Fortner shortly after he crossed into the county and found a loaded gun in his truck.
FBI Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Marlo Graham said the threat included an identified target and a stated time for the intended violence. She said investigators work to assess online threats and intervene before they are carried out.
U.S. Attorney Theodore Hertzberg said federal prosecutors take threats made online and by phone seriously, warning that people who make them can face significant federal consequences.
Fortner is being held without bond in the Lumpkin County Jail. The complaint describes allegations; it does not establish guilt.
