Chamblee’s vacant 18-story state office tower set for Oct. 24 implosion

A vacant 18-story office tower in Chamblee is scheduled to be brought down by implosion on Oct. 24, after a proposed conversion of the building into apartments was abandoned.

The tower at 1800 Century Blvd. NE was formerly occupied by the Georgia Department of Revenue, which left the building in 2024. Windows have been removed and the interior gutted in preparation for demolition, according to Atlas Demolition. The company’s marketing lead, Lindsay Minton, said the implosion is planned for 7:45 a.m.

“[People] will hear a loud sound,” Minton said, adding that a large dust cloud is expected. She said crews have been preparing for it and that dust-control measures will be in place. The dust is expected to settle within hours, while debris removal could take several weeks.

Roads within about 750 feet of the site are expected to close temporarily, and nearby businesses have been notified, Minton said. Residents and businesses in the area may want to plan for the disruption and follow local updates on closures.

The building was considered for a residential conversion, but that plan did not proceed. Its demolition comes amid broader difficulties with office-to-housing projects around metro Atlanta: several proposed conversions have stalled, been canceled or run into financial trouble despite early optimism that vacant office space could help address housing needs.

The building’s future use after demolition has not been announced. Highwoods Properties did not provide details about future plans for the property when asked, according to the report.
