Chamblee’s former state revenue tower faces a 7:45 a.m. demolition Saturday
The vacant 18-story building at 1800 Century Blvd. is scheduled for a controlled implosion on Oct. 24. Police will close roads and establish a safety perimeter around the site.
CHAMBLEE, Ga. — An 18-story office tower that once housed the Georgia Department of Revenue is scheduled to come down in a controlled implosion at 7:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24.
The building at 1800 Century Blvd. has been vacant since 2024. Demolition crews have spent several months stripping its interior and removing windows ahead of the blast.
The tower, built in 1981, was considered too dated for continued commercial use. Plans to convert it into housing were abandoned because the work was judged too costly, said Dave Savignano, owner of Cartersville-based Atlas Demolition, which is handling the project.
The implosion will require carefully engineered charges and precise timing. Savignano said the structure is expected to reach the ground within about two to three seconds after detonation.
The building’s triangular shape makes the project unusual: Savignano said it will be the first triangle-shaped building to be imploded. High-rise implosions account for less than 1% of building demolitions, he said.
Chamblee and Brookhaven police, along with the FBI, are expected to close roads and establish a wide perimeter to keep people away from the site. The demolition company has received substantial public interest from people hoping to watch, Savignano said.
The tower’s demolition follows the loss of both a proposed residential reuse and a viable commercial use for the aging office property.
