Blue Bird plans 375 jobs at new Peach County bus plant

Blue Bird plans to invest $300 million to convert a former motorhome plant in Fort Valley into a school bus factory, a project the company says will create 375 jobs over the next few years.

The proposed facility in Peach County, about 100 miles south of downtown Atlanta, will span 1 million square feet. It will make Type-C school buses, the familiar large buses built on truck chassis, with diesel, electric, gasoline and propane powertrains.

The project was announced Wednesday in a release from Gov. Brian Kemp’s office. Blue Bird, founded in Georgia in 1927, is based in the state and employs about 1,900 people, according to the announcement.

The mix of planned models includes electric buses as well as vehicles powered by fossil fuels. The announcement did not specify how many of each type the new plant will produce or provide a timetable for the factory’s opening.
